Applying my “numbers skills” to travel

After I realized airline algorithms are very much like Google’s algorithms (simpler actually), I started using my analytical skills to find really good travel deals for ourselves.

Travel deals like:

$192 round-trip flights to Aruba (Normally about $600 per person)

$572 round-trip to Cabo including 5 nights at an all-inclusive beach-front resort

(Normally at least $1200 per person including airfare.)

$58 round-trip flights to my wife’s home-town

(normally about $300 per person). I should note that this was when we had been dating about a year – which caused some pretty funny chatter among friends about my motives. Settle down hometown friends & family. $58 flights. That’s why.)

But my wife wanted to go to Hawaii,

…and Hawaii is ridiculously expensive (even for a numbers guy who is good at finding cheap airfare).

So I threw myself into the world of point-hacking.  (Using credit-card signup bonuses to get free flights & hotel stays.)

I was skeptical, but after over a year of studying, analyzing, procrastinating, and thinking of every excuse possible of why I shouldn’t do it…

I finally decided it was time to put the trusty credit card I had used for the past 20 years in a drawer, and try something new.

I couldn’t believe it. It took me over a year of vacillating about the best way to go about point-hacking, but when I finally decided to pull the trigger…

• The application process took about 10 minutes.

• 3 days later, I put my 20-year old credit card in a drawer and put my new one in my wallet.
• 30 days later, I had 50,000 points, and…
• Within 70 days – we were sitting on a beach in Hawaii, and it cost us more to check our bags than pay for our airline ticket.
